The User – Everyday Awareness
Users of industrial doors and roller shutters should operate them only as intended and remain aware of people, vehicles and obstructions within the operating area. Any unusual movement, excessive noise, visible damage, failed safety device or unexpected behaviour should be reported immediately. Users should never interfere with safety systems or attempt repairs themselves, and a door presenting an obvious safety risk should not continue to be used without appropriate assessment.
The Building Owner – Ongoing Safety
The owner, employer, occupier or person responsible for the premises has an important duty to ensure industrial doors and roller shutters are maintained in a safe condition. A suitable maintenance programme should be established based on the equipment, its use, environment and manufacturer requirements, with defects acted upon appropriately. DHF guidance highlights the responsibilities of those in control of premises, while workplace legislation requires doors and gates to be maintained safely.
Professional – Inspection, Maintenance & Compliance
A competent industrial-door professional should assess the complete doorset rather than simply checking that it opens and closes. Powered industrial doors and shutters should be assessed with consideration to BS EN 12453:2017+A1:2021, while mechanical safety — including protection against uncontrolled movement or component failure — is addressed by EN 12604. Inspection should consider hazards such as crushing, impact, shearing, drawing-in, lifting and fall-back, together with the operation of relevant safety devices. Safety-critical defects should be clearly identified and the system left in an appropriately safe condition following maintenance or repair.
